Summary:

Five Things That Never Happened to Sam Winchester

1.

A 6 month old Sam screams at the top of his lungs, hands balled into tiny fists as the nursery burns down around him. Sam doesn’t quit screaming, even as the firemen scoop him up and carry him away from the smoke-filled atmosphere.

Sam cries all the next day too. The nurses can’t get him to eat. Or stop crying long enough to sleep.

And then, late into the night, he just stops crying. There’s no warning, nothing different, he just stops.

And suddenly he’s the perfect child, no fussing, no crying, not even a hint of a whimper escapes his lips.

Sam’s new family calls him an angel.

When Sam says he has a friend, they say it’s an imaginary friend. It’s cute, they say. He has such an imagination! Sam just wrinkles his nose when he hears them say that and counters with: but he’s real. Honest.

Sam stops mentioning his real friend – he is not imaginary – when his parents start saying he’s too old for things like that and they threaten to send his friend away. His friend never goes away but that’s what he tells his parents.

Sam is seventeen when his parents jump on his case about college. Sam wants to go to Stanford; his parents say he should go to one of the colleges closer to home.

“Give those back!” Sam snatches the pamphlets back from his father and tries to straighten out the creases.

“Samuel, as your parents we advise you to think it over.”

“You aren’t my parents.” Sam’s voice is low but holds a certain tone and it makes his parents do a double-take.

“What did you say?” His mom’s voice is high-pitched, panicky.

“You’re not my parents.”

“Young man,-“

“Don’t lie. Dean already told me.”

Sam is still trying the make the bends disappear from the brochures, his brow furrowed in concentration.

“Dean?! That invisible friend of yours? Sam...”

Sam doesn’t bother listening to the rest of his father’s lecture; he’s heard it all before. Instead he tosses Dean a glance and tries not to laugh as Dean makes bunny ears first on his dad, then his mom.

They shut the door a little harder than necessary when they leave his room. Dean crosses the room and places a phantom hand on his shoulder. Sam’s too used to the cold chill that comes from Dean’s touches to shiver anymore.

“Wow, bro. And they think you’re crazy?”

Sam just grins. “Yeah. Funny, huh?”

Sam cries out, his voice bouncing off the walls and echoing all around him. He tries to grab his head, maybe to pull his hair out or maybe to just cradle it in his hands, he’s not quite sure. All he wants is the white hot pain to go away.

He struggles with the restraints holding his wrists down by his sides, kicks at the ones binding his ankles. He’s strapped to the bed and he can’t get up, can’t get away from the screaming and the visions. Firescreamingpainfirefirefire.

“Shh, quiet down Sam. It’s alright. You’re alright.”

He feels the needle enter the flesh of his arm, feels his world tilt towards unconsciousness. But the pain doesn’t lessen and he whimpers as his world goes black around the edges. The nightmares are even worse then the awake dreams.

Sam doesn’t usually have trouble saying no to Dean. It’s usually Dean that can’t seem to say no to Sam. But it’s when Dean comes to Sam and his voice is cracking and his eyes are wet with tears they both know he won’t let fall and the way he’s talking is dangerously close to pleading, that he can’t say no.

Sam pulls Dean into a hug. He’s allowed to do that now because he’s taller and just plain bigger and Dean is too busy focusing all his concentration on those unshed tears to stop him. Dean just kind of collapses into the hug and Sam holds him there.

“Okay.”

“You won’t go?” Sam doesn’t like the way Dean’s voice hitches even saying just those three words.

“I won’t go.”

Sam unpacks his things and by the next morning college is only a whisper of a memory.

He slipped up, sweat slicked hands fumbling the gun and sending it skittering across the room.

It was an accident, a messy accident.

The werewolf buried its long fangs in his flesh. Sam cried out. The werewolf had pounced at him; cat-like in its grace, and now its momentum refused to be thwarted. Sam’s balance had been thrown off and his knees gave out, sending him to the ground.

The werewolf went with him, naturally. And it was still growling, jowls locked in place on his shoulder. Gold eyes watched his with an almost sympathetic gaze.

The rest of the attack and his escape was just a blur. The last he remembered was screaming his brother’s name.

Dean patches him up as they sit in silence. Neither wants to look the other in the eye.

“Sam-“

“It’s not your fault.”

“But I should’ve-“

“It’s not your fault.”

Dean fixes the rest of the gauze to his skin, covering the wounds.

“Dean, what are we going to do?”

“We’ll hide, I suppose. Find somewhere secluded and hole up there during full moons.”

“What about dad?”

Dean doesn’t answer.

It took John a long time to find them, so long they had just started relaxing. But when he came he made sure to make an entrance, throwing the door to their tiny cabin open so hard that the bang of door on wall startled them. Dean and Sam jumped to their feet instinctively, the TV they had been watching now forgotten.

John held the gun, loaded with silver rounds no doubt, aimed at Sam’s chest. Dean moved to stand in front of Sam, protectively shielding him from harm.

John motioned with the gun. “Get out of the way Dean.”

“No. Dad, don’t. You don’t have to. We haven’t done anything wrong!”

“We?” Their father looked genuinely surprised at the idea.

“Yeah, we- I- well, I did it. I turned him.” Dean’s voice shook slightly as he spoke.

“It was an accident, Dad. It wasn’t his fault.” Sam spoke up in his brother’s defense.

“I’m... I’m sorry son.”

Dean hit the floor hard. Sam lunged at his brother’s limp body, kneeling beside him. He smacked Dean’s cheeks gently as if his brother had only passed out, as if he didn’t have a hole in his chest and an ever growing ring of blood coloring his clothes.

“Dean, Dean, Dean.” He chanted the name over and over, a broken record.

“Sam. Sam I’m sorry.” John seemed choked up now but he had his mind set. He had only expected to have to shoot one of his sons today but the body count would now be upped by one. “I’m sorry.”

The second gunshot sounded louder than the first.

“Sam, honey, come get Dean.”

Sam grabs his son and tosses him in the air, catches him and places him back on the ground. Dean grins up at him and Sam smiles back, ruffles his hair.

When he first met Jess at college he never pictured them being married, having kids, being normal. He hasn’t heard from Dean since he left for college forever ago and hasn’t heard from his father in even longer. Thinks it might be for the better. With Dean and Dad around there was bound to be something paranormal going on.

Dean looks like him but sounds like his brother. And he’s got Dean’s cocksure smirk.

Sam likes normal, enjoys normal. But sometimes he misses the old.

This year I've been busy!

Last Thursday I broke deliciouslyebil's X-Box (-12 points). Last Tuesday I pulled over and changed noway_icons's flat tire (15 points). In September I put gum in ciley's hair (-12 points). Last month I ruled Duluth, Minnesota as a cruel and heartless dictator (-700 points). In April I bought porn for anteka (10 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-699 points). For Christmas I deserve a moldy sandwich!

Yeah, I've been wondering

So I've been wondering... Where in the world did Truckzilla go?

All that was wrong with it was that it had the four flat tires, right? Why haven't they gone to retreive it yet? They haven't even mentioned it. All the weaponry and fake ID's in there... All those things could pose a problem if authorites decided to look into into it couldn't it? So why hasn't Dean or Sam or even Bobby gone to get it?

I have nothing against Dean being a soccer mom until he gets the Impala fixed, but new tires and they'd have something to drive other than the minivan.

Ten Things I've learned from 2x02

1. Being afraid of clowns is just as rational a fear as being afraid of flying.

2. Dean should work on the Impala more often.

3. Either the children in this episode are just really stupid or their moms and dads have taken bad parenting to a whole new level.

4. Guys with mullets are really smart.

5. Fun houses aren’t all that fun.

6. No matter what your dad says, clowns are not nice and they’re definitely not your friends.

7. Blind guys aren’t always as blind as they seem.

8. Whenever breaking into someone’s house to kill a homicidal clown, make sure you have the right ammo.

9. If you ever want to break into someone’s house in the middle of the night all you have to do is dress up like a clown and stand in the yard and the kids’ll let you right on in.

10. Just because you sleep on a pool table and say things like ‘I’m on it like divine on dog dookie,’ doesn’t mean you can’t go to schools like M.I.T.

Title: Finger on the Trigger

Notes: Unbeta'd. Written for kali_sama who asked for an Asylum AU wherein Dean gets whammied first, not Sam, and it's Dean that tries to shoot Sam at spn_bunnies. Hopefully I did a good job. 9.9

As soon as Dean hears Sam has been lured to the basement, he’s gone, not even bothering to ask the couple if they knew how to use a gun. Though by the way the girl took a shot at him when he came around the corner, he’s guessing they can handle themselves.

“Sammy?”

There’s a shuffling sound behind him and he turns, expecting to see his brother’s lanky form. “Sam are-“

That’s when it grabs him, digging its fingers into his skin. It presses its fingers into his temples and that’s when the shocks come, waves of horrible jolts that almost cause him to cry out. Almost.

“It’s okay. I’ll make you all better.”

Dean feels his knees give out but not the thump of knee against floor. The pain gets worse and Dean couldn’t call out if he wanted to.

The doctor is still chanting the same lines over and over (I’m not going to hurt you. I’ll make you all better), as Dean’s world becomes rimmed in black.

He would have preferred the younger brother, that’s the one he had been aiming for. The younger had more anger, anger that needed to be released so he could get better.

But this one would work too; he was pretty screwed up himself.

He released Dean a let him slip into a heap on the floor.

“You’ll be better soon.”

“Dean!”

Dean watches as Sam approaches, his shotgun held against his shoulder as he waits for Sam to close the distance.

“What’s that?”

“Dr. Ellicott’s log book.” He holds it up for Sam to see, but tucks it back into his bag when Sam reaches for it.

“Find anything?”

“No. Not really. Just some notes.”

“Are you sure? Maybe you missed something.”

Dean snapped.

“I’m sure.”

Sam freezes at Dean’s sudden hostility. His eyes narrowing in thought and Dean can almost see the little gears working in thought. Sam is smart; he hadn’t gotten in to Stanford for nothing.

“Something’s wrong. The spirits wouldn’t have sent us there for nothing.”

“What are you talking about?”

“What’s in the log book?”

“Nothing but notes, I told you that already.”

“Let me see it.”

Dean tosses the journal at Sam with more force than strictly necessary. Sam opens it and immediately begins scanning the pages. Dean can feel himself slipping, anger bubbling to the surface for no apparent reason.

Sam looks back up at him, the accusation written in his eyes. “He got you, didn’t he?”

It isn’t a question.

Even before Sam can finish taking a step back Dean has pulled the shotgun from his shoulder and aimed it at his brother’s chest.

“So what if he did? He was only helping.”

“No, Dean, he’s not. Trust Me. You’ve seen this,” he waves the journal in front of him,” You’ve read what he’s done. That’s not helping; it’s torture. Just... listen to me-”

Dean sneers. “Listen to you? Listen to me. For once.”

“Dean, what are you-“

Dean shoves the shotgun at Sam’s chest. “I said listen!”

Sam raises his hands in front of him, a sign of surrender. He opens his mouth to speak but Dean cuts him off.

“It’s about time you listen. All you do is whine and complain and contradict everything I have to say. If you hate being here that much then why don’t you just go back Stanford, huh? Go back to being ‘normal’ and doing homework and never have to think about hunting.”

“I don’t want to leave-“

Dean’s hysterical laughter keeps Sam from completing his sentence, and Dean shakes the gun threateningly at Sam once more.

“You don’t want to leave? Why not? You left once, what’s keeping you from doing it again?”

“I left to go to college, Dean. I didn’t just run away. It was Dad who said not to come back.”

Dean pulls the trigger.

The gunshot echoes through the room, surprising both its occupants. Sam is thrown back, hitting the ground hard enough to knock the breath from his lungs and Dean is left standing with the shotgun held awkwardly at his side, caught somewhere between anger and confusion.

But the anger overrides the confusion, no doubt with Ellicott’s help, and Dean advances on Sam, exchanging the shotgun for the small pistol tucked in his belt. Sam is panting for air, one hand lying against his chest and the expression on his face one of agony.

“So... what? You were chasing your dreams, is that it? Dad needed you. Hell, I needed you. And you took the first opportunity you got to run away. You left us and we needed you. Do you think I didn’t have dreams? But Dad needed me so I stayed. Because he’s family, and family comes first.”

The emotion in Sam’s eyes as he looks up at Dean causes a red flag to rise in Dean’s head. Something wasn’t right here. The pistol wavers in Dean’s hand, suddenly uncertain. Sam’s eyes are pleading, the hurt so evident that it might as well have been written in marker on his forehead.

Ellicott only adds to his confusion, constantly goading him towards anger with words whispered in the back of his mind over and over like a broken record. He moves the gun so that it is aimed for Sam’s head, his finger tightening over the trigger.

Another red flag.

Something doesn’t fit, something is wrong. It isn’t supposed to be Sam staring down the barrel of the gun. No, Sam belonged behind him, well protected with his own body while their adversary of the week faced its doom by his hands.

Dean’s brows furrow in thought as he tries to connect the pieces. But the answer seemed unreachable, shrouded by thick fog, buried under his anger.

If Sam isn’t supposed to be at the front of him with a gun aimed at his face then why is he? And why can’t he control what he’s saying? What he’s doing?

Why can’t he stop his finger from tightening against the trigger? All he can understand is the fury that drives him forward because… why? He’s mad at Sam? That doesn’t make sense. Sam is his brother; he would shoot himself before he shot Sam. So... why?

He feels his arm move without his command, his finger tighten without his consent.

The gunshot would have most likely echoed through the room again, just like last time. Only there was no loud bang, only a hollow click.

An image flashes in Dean’s mind. Sam is lying on the ground with a perfectly circle-shaped hole in his head while a dark red puddle begins forming under him, spreading quickly and staining everything with red. Lifeless eyes are staring up at him.

Dean drops the gun as if it’s on fire.

That had been it, the final red flag. Suddenly his brain works fine, knowledge that Ellicott had been hiding from him flooding back to him. The asylum, the patients, the doctor’s log book that read more like a horror novel, Ellicott’s experiments, Sam getting tricked into going to the basement.

Sam.

He had just shot his brother, came close to shooting his twice. If that pistol had been loaded... Dean shivers.

Eyes wide, he turns to his younger brother, half expecting to see a hole between his eyes. Sam surprises him by not being there and, looking around, he notices that his bag has disappeared as well. But just the fact that Sam isn’t still lying there is enough of a confirmation that Sam isn’t dead.

The anger slips away stealing his strength as it goes and leaving him too weak to even stand. So he sits down instead. Ellicott is gone from his mind, the last of his whisperings finally banished from his head. Dean gives a weary grin. Sam has found and burned the body.

Sure enough, Sam emerges from the shadows a few minutes later with the stench of burnt remains still hanging in the air around him. Sam pauses when he sees Dean.

“Dean, you okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah, of course.”

Sam pulls Dean’s arm around his shoulder and hoists him to his feet, ignoring Dean’s protests as he tries to pull away. Sam is the first to break the silence.

“Do you remember what happened back there?”

Dean sees the image of Sam’s corpse in his mind, the lifeless eyes, the insane amount of blood, and shakes his head.

“No. Not really.”
